Clockmakers at Wooler

James Maule married Alison Darling and his son Andrew  (one of four children) was born on 28 August 1730.

When Andrew married, he registered as blacksmith in Scremerston.  One of his sons, also named Andrew, became a Watch and Clockmaker in Wooler, which is approximately 15 miles north west of Alnwick in Northumberland.  He is listed in both the Pigot & Co and Parson & White's directories, and there are also several references to the family in the book 'North Country Clockmakers' by Christian Leo Reid.

Andrew's son John, born on 29 June 1806, also took up the profession and remained in Wooler until around 1860, when he and his family moved to Newcastle upon Tyne.

This is a copy of an original poster of the time, advertising John Maule goods for auction in 1832.  The letter 'I' was often used in place of the 'J'.
